WG3: Delirium

WG3 focuses on the prevention, detection, and management of delirium in European ICUs. A validated delirium screening tool will be selected, translated, and used to measure delirium prevalence in a standardised way across countries.

The group will examine nursing care processes, including screening practices, prevention, and treatment strategies, as well as nurses’ knowledge of delirium. These findings will inform the development of primarily non-pharmacological interventions, such as patient diaries and interventions to support circadian rhythm.

Public and Patient Involvement is central to WG3, recognising the long-term impact of delirium on patients and families. WG3 will test innovative care strategies through feasibility studies and randomised controlled trials, with education programmes developed to address identified knowledge gaps.
